Looking specifically at the teaching on prayer, first note that Jesus is not telling us that we shouldn’t pray in public, because we see many instances of such prayer that is encouraged in the NT.

Nor is he telling us not to pray long or persistently for something, for we know that he teaches otherwise in other places.

What he is condemning is the desire to impress, and I might add, the desire to teach or admonish – “Thank you for nail clippers”. Read more »
